A senior member of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's ruling party was beaten to death on Sunday after appearing on radio to promote prevention measures for an Ebola outbreak, according to a statement from the party.
Marie-Celestin Karondwa, acting president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party's federal executive committee in Butembo, was attacked after taking part in a radio programme where he discussed disease prevention, the UDPS federation in the city said. Butembo is described as a new hotspot for the outbreak.
The party did not specify who carried out the attack or provide details about the circumstances beyond the timing and Karondwa's public health messaging immediately beforehand.
