Scotland's screen production sector is expanding rapidly, with the country's film and television industry projected to contribute £1 billion to the economy by 2030. Productions including The Celebrity Traitors, Outlander, Indiana Jones and Batman films have used Scottish locations from Ardross Castle to Glasgow city centre, which stood in for New York and Gotham City.
The Scottish tourist board has capitalised on this momentum by creating a "screen tourism" trail that directs visitors to filming locations across the country. The sector has grown year on year, according to Screen Scotland.
However, the boom presents two significant challenges. Some observers have flagged a shortage of opportunities for Scottish talent within the expanding industry. The influx of major productions and the associated tourist interest has also raised concerns about overtourism in areas featured on screen, threatening the character of communities and infrastructure in popular filming destinations.
The tension reflects a pattern seen in other regions where screen production brings economic benefit but leaves local workers and residents questioning whether they share in those gains fairly or experience only the strain of increased visitor numbers.
