Metropolitan police investigating the Grenfell Tower fire have handed evidence files to prosecutors concerning 20 companies and 54 individuals, the force announced. The files relate to potential charges including manslaughter and fraud. Police called the handover a "milestone moment" that enables prosecutors to access "very best possible evidence for charging decisions".
The move follows a lengthy investigation into the 2017 fire at the west London residential tower block that killed 72 people. Police had previously identified potential suspects across multiple organisations and individuals involved in the building's design, construction, management and refurbishment.
The Metropolitan police statement did not specify which companies or individuals were named in the files, nor did it detail the nature of the evidence against any particular party. Prosecutors at the Crown Prosecution Service will now review the material to decide whether to bring charges.
The handover represents a procedural step in a long-running inquiry. Criminal investigations into the fire began in 2017 and have examined the roles played by companies responsible for cladding, insulation and other materials used in the tower's refurbishment, as well as contractors, architects and building control officials.
