More than 40 senior Cambridge academics have written to the university's chancellor, Chris Smith, saying the planned investigation into Prof Jason Arday's death is inadequate.
The academics criticised Cambridge's approach in a letter sent this week. They said the university has stepped back from its promise of a thorough review of events before Arday's death.
Arday was appointed professor of sociology of education at Cambridge in 2023. The academics' letter states that it remains unclear how the proposed review will address key questions about the university's role in the circumstances leading to his death. This includes how Cambridge handled the criticism Arday faced after taking up his position.
The signatories also stated that those responsible for "serious failures of leadership" at the university should face consequences.
The Guardian reported the letter but did not provide the full text or name all signatories. The university has not yet publicly responded to the academics' criticisms.
