Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali won the Holborn and St Pancras byelection, securing 12,292 votes (45 per cent) against Green party leader Zack Polanski's 8,928 votes (33 per cent).
The byelection was triggered after former prime minister Keir Starmer resigned from the seat in September. The race had been framed as a two-horse contest between Labour and the Greens.
The Guardian reports the result will relieve Labour leader Andy Burnham in what the publication describes as a "high-stakes battle for the left of British politics" and will dent Polanski's position as "a decisive power player on the left of British politics."
