Sagal Abdi-Wali won the Holborn and St Pancras seat for Labour, replacing Keir Starmer as the MP for the north London constituency. The 43-year-old defeated Green leader Zack Polanski.
Abdi-Wali arrived in Britain as a seven-year-old refugee fleeing Somalia in the 1990s. She settled in Gospel Oak in Camden with her mother and four brothers. She has lived in the area since then.
In her acceptance speech, Abdi-Wali described her election as "deeply personal". She said she hoped her journey would inspire "people who look like me". She added, "This is Camden and this is Britain."
The Guardian reports that decades of volunteering combined with years of active local party politics propelled Abdi-Wali to victory.
