Storm Adam brought record rainfall to eastern Spain this week, triggering severe flooding across Valencia and Alicante provinces. The Valencian town of Olivia received 600mm of rain in 24 hours. Pego in Alicante saw 632mm fall over 36 hours, with 430mm of that concentrated in just six hours.

The deluge forced authorities to impose a temporary lockdown affecting about 850,000 people across 145 municipalities in Valencia and Alicante on Monday. At least five people died in the flooding. Emergency services rescued 500 people and evacuated 2,100 others.

The storm also struck the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile, Storm Austen reached England and Wales as the first named storm of the winter season.
