Two mass shootings in South Africa killed at least 27 people over the weekend, police said Sunday.

Seventeen people died Saturday night when eight suspects armed with AK-47 assault rifles and pistols opened fire at a bar in Wedela township, about 50 miles southwest of central Johannesburg, according to the South African police service. At least 15 other people sustained gunshot injuries in that attack.

A separate shooting near Cape Town killed 10 people at a barbecue venue. Police attributed the Johannesburg shooting to a suspected illegal goldmining turf war.

The incidents occur as South Africa contends with one of the world's highest murder rates. The country faces concurrent investigations into corruption and criminality within its police service.
