The Metropolitan Police have handed prosecutors evidence against 20 organisations and 54 individuals in connection with the Grenfell Tower fire, the force announced. The police asked prosecutors to consider charges including manslaughter and fraud.
The Met described the move as a "milestone moment" that enables prosecutors to access "very best possible evidence for charging decisions." The force did not name any of the organisations or individuals under investigation.
The Grenfell Tower fire killed 72 people in June 2017. The blaze spread rapidly through the west London residential building, with inquiries into its cause identifying combustible cladding and other safety failures as contributing factors.
No charging decisions have been made. The Crown Prosecution Service will now review the police files and decide whether to bring charges against any of those under investigation.
