South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on men to take greater responsibility for violence against women and announced police actions to address a surge in murders, following public anger at the authorities' response.

Ramaphosa acknowledged that current efforts have failed to adequately protect women. He announced two specific measures to be completed within 60 days. Police will review unsolved murders, attempted murders and serious sexual offences against women and children. The police force will also produce a funded plan to reduce the backlog of forensic cases involving such crimes.

The announcement comes amid a recent wave of killings that has prompted criticism of how authorities have handled the violence.
