Jagtar Singh Johal, a British Sikh activist, has been released from a Delhi prison after nine years in detention without a full trial.

The Indian high court issued the release order on 18 September and warned the government it would face contempt of court charges if it refused to comply. Johal's lawyers filed a writ of habeas corpus, arguing he was being held against the court's explicit direction. The contempt warning prompted the government to release him.

Johal's case centers on his prolonged incarceration without completion of trial proceedings. The high court's intervention followed the legal challenge to his detention.
